Best Starter Class in a 2D Pixel MMORPG: Picking Your First Job

Stuck on the character creation screen? This guide breaks down all four starting classes and twelve advancement branches in Endless Adventure Online so you can pick by how you actually like to play.

The short answer

If you just want the verdict: pick Swordsman for your first character, Rogue or Mage if you want fast solo farming, and Priest if you want every party to fight over you. All four classes level smoothly through the Beta — there is no trap pick. The difference is which rhythm you enjoy.

Every starting class also branches into three advancement paths later (the full list lives on the classes page), so what you choose now is an opening move, not a life sentence.

Swordsman

Tank / Physical Frontliner Safest first pick

Frontline melee with high health and defense. The combat loop is intuitive — walk in, hit things, survive — and mistakes cost you the least. The safest way to learn dungeon pacing and boss patterns.

  • Knight: High defense, taunts and mitigation — the most dependable frontline in any party.
  • Berserker: Bleed stacks and lifesteal-fueled crits that turn risk into burst windows.
  • Spellblade: Elemental weapon arts and hybrid physical-magic scaling for a different late game.

Best for: First-time MMORPG players, steady levelers, and anyone who likes carrying the party’s weight up front.

Rogue

Physical Burst Damage Fastest solo farmer

Speed, poison blades, crits and multi-hit pressure. The highest damage ceiling and best single-target kill speed, but thin health means positioning and timing matter — the most hands-on feel of the four.

  • Assassin: Backstab crits, stealth and poison DOTs for deadly short windows.
  • Marksman: Ranged crit bow gameplay — this is the archer path.
  • Duelist: Dual-blade flurries and attack-speed scaling pushed to the limit.

Best for: Players who enjoy high APM, big crit numbers and fast solo leveling.

Mage

Area Magic Damage Best at clearing packs

Ranged area spells that burn whole groups at once. Outstanding leveling efficiency, but a fragile body and real MP management — you need to keep your distance when things close in.

  • Elementalist: Fire, ice and lightning with DOT fields — the most explosive caster route.
  • Sage: Arcane missiles and multi-target auto-lock built around stable MP loops.
  • Battlemage: Spell shields and elemental weapons for a caster who dares to fight up close.

Best for: Players who like ranged damage, area clearing and elemental matchups.

Priest

Healer / Support Always wanted in parties

Heals, shields, cleanses and party buffs. Not the fastest solo class, but always the most in-demand pick for dungeons — and the advancement branches mean you are never locked into pure healing.

  • Cleric: Pure healing, resurrection and group buffs — the classic party core.
  • Dark Priest: Shadow DOTs, curses and self-sustain for an offense-minded priest.
  • Monk: Melee strikes with self-healing — a self-reliant battle priest who solos just fine.

Best for: Players who enjoy team responsibility, being needed, or an unconventional damage-support hybrid.

Three myths about picking a class

“Healers are boring” — not here. Priest has two unconventional branches: Dark Priest (shadow damage) and Monk (self-healing melee). Pure support is only one of three options.

“Check the meta first” — balance keeps shifting during Beta, so chasing a tier list buys you little. Pick the class whose skills you actually want to press.

“The early choice doesn’t matter” — the opposite. Your starting class defines how the first few dozen levels feel, and if those aren’t fun you won’t reach advancement at all. Comfort first, build later.

After you pick

Class is only the first progression axis. There are also talent points, equipment and refinement, and gathering and crafting outside combat. For the fastest route up, follow the Lv.1–100 leveling guide.

Endless Adventure Online is a no-download browser MMORPG — character creation is one click away, so you can simply try all four classes before committing. That is the cheapest cure for class-choice anxiety there is.

FAQ

Starter class FAQ

I have never played an MMORPG. Which class should I pick?

Swordsman. High durability and an intuitive melee loop give you the most room for mistakes while you learn the game — you can always roll another character later.

Can I change my class later?

You cannot swap your starting class directly, but each class branches into three very different advancement paths — a Priest can go full damage as a Dark Priest, for example. You can also create a new character anytime.

Which class is fastest for solo play?

Rogue and Mage clear fastest: Rogue for single-target burst, Mage for area packs. The Monk branch of Priest is also a famously self-sufficient solo route.

Is there an archer class?

Bow gameplay lives in the Rogue class — advance into Marksman for ranged crits and multi-hit arrows.
